A charming remnant of 19th-century fishing towns sits on Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula. Before the villagers made the switch to wooden sledges, they relied on donkey power to get their items from one place to another. Interesting, but hardly worth the entrance fee. A local drags a sledge down the main hill. Entry fee covers parking, the film show, entrance to two museums, two chapels and the court gardens. It was a nice little village with a very steep walk down the cobbles and back up. To simplify this experience, two of us paid £6.75 each to enter a village. On the way down there are some beautiful shops with local arts and crafts and a quaint tea room and garden. We recommend visitors watch the 20 min. Historical & Heritage Tours, Scenic Railroads. The braying beasts of burden schlepped heavy baskets of herring from the fishing ships docked in the harbor into the village, and also brought in supplies from outside towns. You must wear good shoes and I would recommend getting the truck back up because it is hard work walking back up!! We learnt a lot from the knowledgeable gentleman who resides in the village and runs the fisherman's cottage and adjoining Kingsley museum. Outside goods and supplies are trucked into the parking lot at the top of the village, then delivered to the residents and businesses that line the cobblestone street via the sledges. The little shops are pleasant and the eateries cater for gluten intolerance (though my lactose intolerance did confuse some). I have visited and stayed in Clovelly many times, pre and post the visitor centre. People pull these huge wood and crate contraptions along the main road, which is called both Up-Along or Down-Along, depending on the direction you’re heading. It is like a journey back in time as there are no cars and deliveries still get delivered by donkey! We certainly recommend visitors take their time whilst walking on the famous cobbled street known as ‘Down-Along’ or ‘Up-Along’. In retrospect, there are limitless things I could have done better with this money; the experience was made worse by the impression given at the top of the village that payment is compulsory and that paying helps to pay for the upkeep of the village. The award-winning Visitor Centre was built in 1988 and houses modern-day facilities which could be seen as out-of keeping if situated within the village.We are sorry to hear that you say the ladies toilets at Temple Bar were blocked, the toilets are checked and cleaned regularly and we have received no complaints, however we will have someone check them.Bins in the village are emptied regularly, as I’m sure you can imagine during peak times, they fill up rather quickly and seagulls can be particularly cheeky. Don't bypass the lovely silk shop and donkey stables where the kids can have rides at the top of the village. A must before you embark on the descent is to see the informative film show, if you miss this you will totally miss the point and rich history. The bottom of the village contains the hotel and there is also a waterfall somewhere along the beach but the seafront has large pebbles and is difficult to navigate.
